Summary
The Primary Cambridge Music Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, engaging Music instruction across the Primary School in alignment with the Cambridge Primary Music Framework. The teacher fosters musical knowledge, creativity, performance skills, and cultural awareness while ensuring all learners make measurable progress.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning
- Deliver Music lessons aligned with the Cambridge Primary Music Curriculum, ensuring strong coverage of listening, composing, performing, and appraising.
- Use a wide range of instruments, digital tools, and vocal activities to engage learners and promote practical music-making.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including EAL learners and students requiring additional support.
- Plan lessons that are active, student-centred, and developmentally appropriate.
- Assess student learning using formative and summative methods aligned with Cambridge standards.
- Maintain accurate records of progress, attainment, and behaviour.
Curriculum & Planning
- Contribute to the development and refinement of the school’s Music curriculum and long-term plans.
- Prepare termly schemes of work, detailed lesson plans, and performance-based learning objectives.
- Integrate cross-curricular links where appropriate, especially with English, ICT, and Creative Arts.
Performance & Events
- Direct or support school concerts, assemblies, recitals, and productions throughout the year.
- Prepare students for internal and external musical showcases, competitions, or Cambridge-related creative activities.
- Manage rehearsal schedules, student groups, and logistics for performances.
Classroom Environment & Behaviour
- Create a positive, structured learning environment that encourages respect, creativity, and safe handling of instruments.
- Implement consistent behaviour expectations in line with school policies.
- Ensure all instruments and equipment are stored, maintained, and used safely.
Professionalism & Collaboration
- Engage in ongoing professional development, including Cambridge-specific training.
- Work collaboratively with class teachers, the Art & ICT departments, and the wider primary team.
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress, behaviour, and achievements.
- Participate in school-wide initiatives, committees, and events.
Technology & Innovation
- Use educational technology (e.g., digital keyboards, notation software, learning apps) to enhance teaching and learning.
- Incorporate basic recording, editing, and digital composition tools appropriate for primary learners.
Maintain the Music Room inventory and suggest resources that support modern music pedagogy.
Qualifications Experience & Personal Qualities
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Music, Music Education, or a related field (required).
- Teaching qualification (PGCE or equivalent) preferred.
- Experience teaching Music in a Cambridge or international school environment is an advantage.
- Strong instrumental/vocal proficiency and the ability to teach a variety of musical styles.
- Confident classroom management and excellent communication skills.
- Ability to lead ensembles, choirs, or instrumental groups is desirable.
